The Dentist

This morning I had my six month date with the dentist.  Amber went first this time.  She is very diligent with her dental hygiene, definitely more than I am.  So it was quite a surprise to both of us when after her cleaning they informed her she might have two small cavities.  They said she had great teeth and was doing a great job taking care of them but there were two cavities under her sealants  that they were unable to catch earlier.  It really freaked me out since I was next and am not as careful with my teeth as I should be.

Let me say right off that bat that in my 24 years of life I have never had a cavity, so the thought of getting one really scares me.  I think it’s partly due to the fear of the unknown, but I think I also feel that since I’ve made it this far I have a reputation to uphold, even if it’s just a self-imposed one.  Anyway, I went through the cleaning process just waiting for them to find something that would indicate a cavity.  Fortunately there wasn’t anything, but they did have a couple teeth they “wanted to keep an eye on” which worries me.

This latest experience with the dentist has started me thinking.  It’s crazy that even with all the care you can give to your teeth, you can still get cavities.  I was raised in a family that put a lot of emphasis on taking care of our teeth, and although we only went to the dentist every couple of years my siblings and I never had many dental issues.   I started to wonder how much more I could do to take care of my teeth.  I don’t drink much soda, and I don’t really like candy (or anything sweet, really) so I don’t eat it very often.  The only thing I can think of is to make sure I brush more often.  I’m going to leave my standard-dentist-issue toothbrush at the office and try to start brushing after lunch as well as before bed.  We’ll see if I can make it a couple more years without any cavities.

  1. Don’t even get me started. I don’t know why God only gave us two sets of teeth but man that is one of the big questions I have. I personally think its for Discipline. But for get where we come from and how old the earth is. Where is my 3rd and 4th set of teeth? 🙂
